The Bergamot tree can grow up to 16 feet high, with fragrant star-shaped flowers, and dark green leaves, bearing citrus fruit resembling a cross between an orange and a grapefruit. The name Bergamot is derived from the city Bergamo in Lombardy where the oil was first sold. In this variety, the bergaptene content which causes photosensitivity has been removed. This allows the Bergamot to be used in skin and hair care formulations without concern for phototoxicity after exposure to the sun.
Use: Bergamot essential oil has been used in Ayurveda medicine to calm heightened nervous states (Vata) and in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Since ancient time it has many uses, from antiseptic to being fixative in parfumes;
Cautions: Dilute well before use; May cause skin irritation in some individuals; a skin test is recommended prior to use. Contact with eyes should be avoided.
